Nichols makes 26 saves; Dempsey with a pair of goals in Hounds pre-season victory
SUDBURY, ON-
The Soo Greyhounds third pre-season game Friday Night was in jeopardy earlier in the day when power disrupted operations at the Sudbury Community Arena.
And after a delay which saw the team in a stand-still in the Espanola area awaiting word from OHL officials, the start time was pushed back until 8 p.m.
The game marked the Northern Ontario rivals second meeting of the exhibition schedule, after the Wolves edged the Hounds 4-3 in a shootout last Saturday Night in the Lock City.
Sudbury would get on the scoreboard first when the Hounds were on the wrong end of an unlucky bounce which saw Jake Ryan (from J. Harris and C. Thibodeau) beat JUSTIN NICHOLS for the early first-period lead.
Later in the period NICHOLS (3rd Rd, 2011) would turn aside the Wolves with a big stop that lead to a DYLAN STAPLES unassisted goal and the Hounds would pull even.
Off-season acquisition MITCHELL DEMPSEY appeared to pull the Hounds in the lead late in the period but the goal was disallowed as it was deemed the play was whistled down prior to the puck crossing the line. As a result both teams would head into the dressing room after twenty minutes tied 1-1.
After going scoreless for over thirteen minutes in the second period, Sudbury would regain the lead when Brody Silk grabbed the Wolves tally with 6:51 remaining.
Then with just 7.5 second remaining on the clock, DEMPSEY (assist to Jared McCann) would put great snap shot low blocker-side and once again we would be tied, 2-2 after two periods.
Fast forward to the third period and the Hounds would grab their first lead of the game on the power-play when NICK COUSINS beat the Wolves netminder for a 3-2 Soo lead.
The locals would then increase the lead to a pair when MITCHELL DEMPSEY scored his 2nd of the night, with the assists to Sudbury product Jacob Smith and rearguard Matt Fuller.
JUSTIN NICHOLS would stop all eleven shots in the third period as the Hounds went on to their first pre-season victory, 4-2 over the Wolves.
The Hounds will now round-out their exhibition schedule on Saturday Night (Sept. 15) when they host their I-75 rivals, the Saginaw Spirit, in a 7:07 puck drop at the Essar Centre.
Tickets are available by stopping by the Essar Centre starting at 10 a.m.
